Education Award: Center for Homeownership - Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Forsyth County Inc., Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Center for Homeownership is the central housing education, counseling and resource agency for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County residents and is administered by the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Forsyth County, N.C. The one-stop, full-service housing counseling center was formed in 2001, since then thousands of individuals have turned to the center for pre-purchase counseling, credit rebuilding, homebuyer education, budgeting assistance, and seminars and workshops. The center has helped more than 900 families achieve first-time homeownership, with a foreclosure rate of less than 2 percent. |

Finance Award: Movin' Out Inc., Madison Wis.
The nonprofit housing organization helps individuals with permanent disabilities and their families attain and sustain safe, affordable and integrated homeownership outside of group housing so that they may fully participate in their community. Through pre- and post-purchase education, access to deferred or forgivable loans averaging $16,000, and strong community partnerships, the organization has provided more than $18 million to families across the state, helping nearly 900 households achieve homeownership. In addition, funds have been provided to nearly 300 households for safety or accessibility modifications. |

|
Leadership Award: David Bland, Travois Inc., Kansas City, Mo.
Travois was founded 15 years ago by chairman David W. Bland to offer development and financing assistance, support and training to American Indian tribes who suffer from some of the worst housing conditions in the nation. Bland has worked tirelessly with more than 50 tribal organizations to develop housing for low-income American Indian families, the elderly and people with disabilities, primarily through private investors and the federal government’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. The organization has successfully raised more than $350 million in new private capital that has been used to build or rehab more than 3,700 homes for rent or ownership on reservations across the country. |

Media Award: eHome America, Community Ventures Corp., Lexington, Ky.
eHome America is an online home buyer education tool created by Community Ventures Corp., as a low-cost option for offering high-quality homebuyer education. The multilingual online course is based on NeighborWorks America curricula and addresses homebuying readiness, budgeting and credit, shopping for a home, getting a mortgage and sustaining homeownership. The 8-hour program checks students’ learning throughout with frequent quizzes and tests. Following the online course, students must receive phone or in-person counseling before receiving their completion certificate. The online course was so successful it was made available to housing agencies across the nation, and today more than 10,000 homebuyers in 42 states have completed the course. |

Policy Award: Alejandro Becerra,, author and consultant, Silver Spring, Md.,
Becerra is a housing expert who for nearly three decades has advocated policies to increase and sustain minority ownership. Becerra’s long-term dedication, leadership and commitment have taken him from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development, where he pioneered a homeownership voucher program in Arizona, to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he helped preserve the federal government’s only rural homeownership program for low- and moderate-income families, to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, where he served as a former Senior Housing Fellow. Becerra has authored numerous articles and papers and recently published a book, “Hispanic Homeownership: The Key to America’s Housing and Economic Renewal.” |

A not-for-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing neighborhoods in central and upstate New York. In addition to offering home buyer education, financial counseling and foreclosure prevention services, the organization plans and develops affordable, high-quality homes and is leading a redevelopment in Syracuse’s Near West Side neighborhood. As a key partner of the Near West Side Initiative, a coalition that aims to revitalize a dilapidated neighborhood near the city’s downtown. As part of the project, Home HeadQuarters has acquired 103 residential properties and is rehabbing, deconstructing or demolishing, or building new homes with an emphasis on energy conservation and affordable homeownership. . |

The full-service real estate brokerage that has helped hundreds of culturally diverse South Florida residents achieve the American dream of homeownership. The brokerage’s decade-old housing education program is offered to more than 600 low- to moderate-income individuals each year and focuses on pre-purchase education, financial fitness counseling and post-purchase advice and resources, such as caring for your home and avoiding foreclosure. Adamo has strong community partnerships and works closely with clients to help them identify and qualify for down payment, closing cost assistance and subsidized second mortgages. |
